The musical journey of bassist Darius Pope (DP) began with a pair of drumsticks. At just five years old, DP learned the foundations of rhythm from his brother, Cromwell. But while drumming in the church, it was the "low end" that truly captured his imagination—leading to the gift of his first four-string bass and a path that has spanned over three decades.
A natural talent with a diverse range of abilities, DP’s versatility was evident early on. While at Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs, he lettered in everything from orchestra and choir to football and basketball. This rare blend of athletic discipline and musical excellence earned him the National Choral Award and a full scholarship to Colorado State University-Pueblo. While earning his B.A. in Music Education, DP immersed himself in every sound possible—performing in jazz and concert choirs while holding down the rhythm on bass and keys.
Today, DP serves as a regular bassist for Flatirons Community Church performing in a high-production live environment that demands precision and versatility. Whether he is laying down the pocket for Such (iamsuch.com) or inspiring the next generation as a choir teacher, his philosophy remains the same: Play for the song. Darius resides in Denver with his wife, Megan, and their son, D.J., continuing to prove that "the groove" is both a professional craft and a lifelong calling.
